Five Dominican provinces under yellow alert
The Emergency Operations Center (COE) is maintaining the yellow alert for the provinces of Monseñor Nouel, La Vega, María Trinidad Sánchez, Espaillat and Sánchez Ramírez.
Green alerts are also in place for Duarte (especially the Bajo Yuna area), Santiago, Hermanas Mirabal, Monte Plata, San Pedro de Macorís, Santo Domingo and the National District.
The COE is advising people living on steep slopes that are prone to landslides, areas with poor drainage that are prone to flooding and residents of areas near rivers, streams and gullies to take the usual precautions.
The bulletin also informs that a low-pressure system situated over the north east of the Bahamas remains unstable but that the risk of it becoming a tropical storm or cyclone over the next 48 hours is very low. It said that it posed no risk for the Dominican Republic.
Local conditions will see a continuation of scattered showers, thunderstorms and possible wind gusts across most of the country, as a result of a weather system that is affecting the country, especially in the south western and border areas.
This weather is expected to last for the rest of the week, and rains will tend to be more frequent in the afternoons and evenings, according to the Meteorological Office (ONAMET).
Dominican merengue icon “out of danger”
Composer Aramis Villalona, brother of famous singer Fernando Villalona, has told reporters that the musician is out of danger following tests at New York City’s Presbyterian Hospital, where he is being treated.
Radio presenter Enrique Fernández, who was serving as a spokesman for Aramis Villalona, said that preliminary tests had not detected any cardiac damage. The merengue star will remain under observation as a precaution, nonetheless, said Fernández.
Villalona had been taken to the hospital after feeling chest pains during a visit to a bank in New York City.
Enrique Fernández stressed that Aramis Villalona had promised to keep the public informed about his brother’s state of health.
Over the last few years, Fernando Villalona has suffered a range of health problems due to arterial hypertension and cardiac issues.
Dominican drug authorities announce 1,600kg haul
The National Drug Control Department (DNCD) has confiscated 1,636 kilograms of cocaine from an international network it says was trying to step into the gap left by Ramón Antonio del Rosario Puente (Toño Leña), according to DNCD head Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo.
He said that nine people had been arrested, including Puerto Rican Arturo López, Colombian César Buotrago “Cali”, and Justo Germán.
Also under arrest are Carlos Ovalles Torres “Chichi”, Ángel Montero “Canano”, Leudi Morato Ponce “The captain of the launch”, as well as Daniel Torre “Dany”, Antonio Ramírez “Costeño” and Ramón Poche “Félix”.
Two men, Benito Vidal Inirio “Andrés” and Richard Rosario, are on the run from the authorities.
The DNCD chief said that the drug haul had been decommissioned in two operations carried out on Saturday and Sunday, involving the Navy, the National Police, the Armed Forces, the Air Force, using the Super Tucano airplanes, and the United States Southern Command Task Force.
Following a long investigation process lasting several months they succeeded in dismantling the network, which spanned the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Curacao and the United States, whose main activity was the transhipment of drugs through Dominican territory using both boats and planes.
He said that on Saturday afternoon they managed to intercept a boat 105 nautical miles within territorial waters, which dumped the merchandise into the sea upon realizing that it had been intercepted
“The following day we managed to capture another group in Juan Dolio from whom we confiscated the rest of the drugs, as well as four SUVs, one of which is presidential-style and armored and was carrying the drugs”, he added.
The drug consignment was put on public display at a press conference with Navy chief Luis Homero Lajara Solá and Santo Domingo prosecutor Perfecto Acosta.
