The high Court struck down Castillo’s appeal of the sentence, citing article 426 of the Penal Procedural Code which limits its power to overturn convictions only on constitutional or human rights issues.
The resolution confirms the civil conviction against Castillo, including payment of damages of RD$5.14 billion to the bank Progreso; RD$6.9 billion for the Progreso shareholders, and RD$233 million to affiliated companies.
The National District Appellate Court’s 1st Penal Chamber upheld the conviction against Castillo on August 7.

Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic will receive a US$20 million loan from Venezuela’s Petrocaribe program to ease the ongoing energy crisis, said Hacienda minister Vicente Bengoa, who stressed the loan will help repay what private power companies say is a US$425 million debt.
The Dominican government will also provide US$10 million toward repayment. He said Wednesday that the companies already received US$274 million this month.
The increase of daily blackouts have lead to protests in which demonstrators clashed with police, leaving two dead. Power companies also have blamed faulty equipment for the crisis.
Venezuela created Petrocaribe in 2005 to sell fuel to member countries at preferential terms and help finance oil infrastructure projects.
